Pelican is a quiet lakes-side
suburb of Lake Macquarie and is situated north of Swansea (Just near the Swansea
opening bridge) it is only half an hour from Newcastle, or an hour and a half
from Sydney.
Pelican
was originally named after the many pelicans seen there. The suburb is on the
very edge of Lake Macquarie and is a very popular area for boating and fishing
enthusiasts.
The
aboriginal name for the area was Ky-yee-bah meaning place for games.
Corroborees, canoe races and other games were held by the Aborigines in and
around the Lakes entrance. It is now a quiet lakeside residential area, well
known for its popular grassy park, jetty and lake foreshore BBQ facilities.
Swimming is popular in the little sandy bays found along the lakes edge.
Pelican
has its own marina where you can hire a boat, or dine out at the “Milano’s on
the Lake” restaurant. The lake often comes alive on the weekends with sailing
boats, fishing boats and people out in their little “tinnies”. Or you can just
sit by the water and soak up the lake atmosphere.
Pelican
is only a two minute drive from Swansea (includes many takeaway shops and Coles
supermarket), and two minutes across the highway to Blacksmiths Beach (a popular
surfing beach). Caves Beach, where you can explore the natural cave formation,
is also only five minutes drive away.
